Although I'm not sure what the exact intentions were when building these partly roofed concrete pillars not far from our studio, I assume they were meant for parking cars. As good as the intention may be, I continuously observe that one car keeps taking up two parking spaces. Looking closer at the layout of this structure, I realize two things: it's made of rough concrete (not smooth moulded) and the pillars are rectangular. Combine this with a narrowly measured double Parking space between each pillar and no ground marking for a visual parking space division (e.g a white line), it makes me realize that it's not a selfish act of car owners to take up all this precious space, but rather an unintentional miscommunication from an spacial interface point of view.
If these pillars had a slight more space between each other, I'd like to think it would make drivers park closer to those rough pillar edges, thus offering the extra space for another car. But since they're already built, a simple white line might do the trick.
